Chris Brown shocks fans by buying a pet monkey for his three-year-old daughter

Marmosets are really not a suitable household pet.

Chris Brown has been criticised by his fans for seemingly buying his three-year-old daughter a pet monkey.

The controversial R&B star posted a video on Instagram of his daughter Royalty playing with the marmoset.

“Royalty, is this your baby? Is this your baby?” Brown is heard asking on the video.

“I dunno – she’s gonna be bigger than you, man. Y’all got the same sized head.”

The RSPCA urges people not to keep marmoset monkeys as pets for a number of reasons.

“It is impossible to provide an environment as complex and rich as the wild for a marmoset kept as a pet,” the animal welfare charity says.

“Marmosets scent-mark their surroundings, so are unsuitable to be kept in a home.”

It adds: “They are highly intelligent creatures who get easily bored, which can cause intense stress.

“In the wild, they create stable social groups, so to keep them alone is cruel and unnatural.”

Fans of Brown seemed to agree, going by the comments on the Instagram post.

“Bred for the rich or taken from the wild for the rich either way its so wrong,” said luisacyrus.

“I just hope the monkey will be given to people who will put it in the right life and not the life of a rich man’s toy.”

j99m added: “With money comes great responsibility, too bad it doesn’t remove great stupidity as well.”

Some fans suggested that while he may have allowed Royalty to play with the marmoset, he wasn’t actually going to let her keep it as a pet.

“He should be raising her to understand which animals should not be kept as pets,” said kimmie238.

“Perhaps he simply arranged for her to get close to this monkey so she could pet it, and then he made sure the monkey went back to the right place.

“Who knows for sure. But if he really gave his daughter this monkey as a present to keep then he is teaching her all the wrong things.”

NME.com has contacted Brown’s manager to find out.
