CHUMBAS OPPOSE EXECUTION OF EX-PANTHER

Acoustic show will raise awareness about American "political prisoner"...

Chumbawambaplay a special acoustic gig on December 12, a benefit for former Black Panther MUMIA ABU-JAMAL who is due to be executed in Philadelphia for the murder of a police officer, a crime that many people think he did not commit.

Mumia Abu-Jamal was driving a cab in Philadelphia in 1982 when he saw his younger brother being beaten up by a policeman. he got out of his cab to intervene. Prosecutors say that he then shot the policeman, DANIEL FAULKNER, in the back then stood over him and shot him in the head. Jamal claimed that the real shooter ran off; other witnesses came forward to corroborate this. A mass of forensic evidence also emerged to cast doubt on the prosecution’s case.

Despite this, Jamal was found guilty. The prosecution pointed out his past membership of the militant Black Panther and said that the murder of the police officer was politically motivated.
