Coldplay and Gorillaz top the MTV Europe Awards nominations

The two bands will go head to head in Lisbon

Coldplay and Gorillaz have topped the nominations for this year’s MTV Europe Music Awards.

The two bands, along with Robbie Williams, Foo Fighters, Green Day and Black Eyed Peas, are also set to perform at the event, which is due to take place at Lisbon’s Atlantic Pavilion on November 3.

The animated band Gorillaz are up for the Best Group, Best Song, Best Pop, Best UK & Ireland Act and Best Video for ‘Feel Good Inc.’, while Coldplay are nominated in the Best Group, Best Rock, Best UK & Ireland Act categories, plus Best Song for ‘Speed Of Sound’ and Best Album for ‘X&Y’.

Coldplay said: ” We’re delighted to be nominated for five categories in this years’ MTV Europe Music Awards. Our European fans have given us incredible support over the years. We’re looking forward to an amazing night in Lisbon on November 3.”

Gwen Stefani is tipped in four categories – Best Female, Best Pop, Best Album for ‘Love. Angel. Music. Baby.’ and Best Video for ‘What You Waiting For?’.

50 Cent, Green Day, Snoop Dogg, U2 and James Blunt have also been nominated three times each.

The MTV Europe Music Awards 2005 will be hosted by Sacha Baron Cohen in his guise of the Khazakstan television journalist Borat Sagdiyev.
