The band play a triumphant set at the Californian event…

COLDPLAY closed the opening day of California’s COACHELLA FESTIVAL last night (April 30) with a triumphant set of greatest hits and several new tracks.

Taking to the stage shortly before 11pm, the band performed ’Clocks’ and ’The Scientist’ alongside songs from their upcoming new album ‘X & Y’ including ‘Square One’ and ‘Speed Of Sound’.

Singer Chris Martin’s wife Gwyneth Paltrow watched the group from the side of the stage as did a number of celebrities including Danny DeVito, Cameron Diaz and Justin Timberlake.

The festival, which was cooler than last year’s triple degree heat, saw over 40,000 people flock to the Empire Polo Field in Indio to see a host of British bands.

Also appearing yesterday were Razorlight who flew in especially from their current US support tour with Muse just for the day.

Bloc Party, performing in the Mojave Tent, received one of the strongest responses of the day from the crowd and saw The Futureheads, Keane and Radio 4 turn up to watch the band play.

Other highlights included a tight mid afternoon set from The Raveonettes and a heated performance by the reunited Bauhaus, whose singer Peter Murphy entered the Main Stage hanging from the lofty ceiling.

The festival continues today (May 1) with appearances from The Bravery, Nine Inch Nails, New Order and hip hop supergroup Black Star.
