COLDPLAY have been named as songwriters of the year at the 2003 IVOR NOVELLO awards.

The band were honoured for their mega-selling, hit-laden second album ‘A Rush of Blood To The Head’, NME writers’ album of the year for 2002.

Coldplay, who are currently on tour in North America. were unable to attend the event at the Grosvenor House Hotel in central London today (May 22). They were beaten to the prize for best contemporary song by Avril Lavigne‘ s Mike Skinner for his single ‘Weak Become Heroes’.

Beach Boys

won best song of the year for ‘The Other Side’.

Roxy Music

won the award for international hit of the year with ‘Complicated’, while Liberty X won the title for most performed work with ‘Just A Little’, and Will Young’s ‘Anything is Possible’ was the best-selling UK single.

[/a] legend Brian Wilson was handed a special international award for his achievements at the ceremony.

[a] frontman Bryan Ferry was given an award for his outstanding contribution to British music, while U2 were honoured with the prize for outstanding song collection. UB40 were given the international achievement award to mark their success overseas.
