Australian singer performs her take on song that helped inspire debut album
Courtney Barnett has covered ‘Cannonball’ by The Breeders. Watch her version of the song below.
Barnett recorded the cover for The AV Club and revealed that the track, taken from the US band’s 1993 album ‘The Last Splash, provided inspiration when she came to record her own album earlier this year.
“I chose it because I love that album,” said Barnett. “Actually when we went to make our album recently, I put that song on the morning of the first day of recording to psyche me up,” Barnett said.
The Australian’s take on the 90s classic follows Barnett covering the entirety of the INXS album ‘Kick’ earlier this year. The performance took place as part of label Pure Pop’s Summer Of Classic Albums series. She also covered ‘Hanging Around’ by The Lemonheads for NME, which can be seen below.
Barnett recently finished recording her debut album, which is due for release in the new year. It will be the follow-up to her 2013 “double EP” ‘A Sea of Split Peas’.
A new song from Barnett called ‘Pickles In The Jar’ was revealed last month (August). The track features on a new compilation from Milk! Records, Barnett’s own label.
