John Lydon, Kate Moss, Jarvis – Shockwaves NME Awards gossip round-up

Libertines for Glasto, Marina's diamonds, glum Foals – your music gossip stop

Welcome to a special edition of the Daily Gossip: this time full of goss from last night’s (February 23) Shockwaves NME Awards 2011 ceremony, which took place at London‘s O2 Academy Brixton.

Top gossip:

The guestlist for the Shockwaves NME Awards featured a who’s who list of music stars, but John Lydon was the centre of attention throughout the ceremony.

Everyone from Kate Moss to Muse clamoured to meet the Sex Pistols man. He’s possibly the only person in the world not to actually recognise Ms Moss, though. After she’d introduced herself, saying how pleased she was to see “Johnny” again and gone back to her seat, he was seen looking bemused and asking his posse, “Who the fuck was that?”

Elsewhere at the awards, Lydon paid loving tribute to his stepdaughter Ari Up, who passed away last year, and had a proper natter to fellow punk icon Mick Jones. He seemed to approve of the music too, nodding along to My Chemical Romance early on in the evening – and didn’t even get ruffled when a young girl nicked pizza from his table.

Other awards gossip:

Michael Eavis confirmed that he wants The Libertines to play Glastonbury this year. “I hope they will. Fingers crossed,” he told us.

Marina Diamandis apparently donned £750,000-worth of diamonds for the do.

Jarvis Cocker, who had turned up to the ceremony wielding a walking stick, later had to haggle to get into the afterparty at The Ivy. Once he finally got in he mingled with Alex Turner, Alexa Chung, Hurts and a very drunk Warpaint, who had stolen Foals‘ award for Best Track. Cocker was later seen walking around Leicester Square at about 3am (GMT). He still had his walking stick.

My Chemical Romance barely touched a drop of booze until after they’d been onstage to collect their gongs.

Juliette Lewis went completely mental during Foo Fighters‘ set, jumping on her table and chastising those around her for not doing the same thing.

Foals were probably the moodiest band of the evening, saying they didn’t want to have their photo taken even after they’d won their award. They eventually relented, though still looked glum. Cheer up chaps, you won!

Muse‘s Matt Bellamy was caught completely unaware when the band won the Best British Band award. At the time, he was deep in conversation with Michael Eavis – apparently getting some farming tips, he told us later – and was seen mouthing the words “Is this us? Have we won something?” to his bandmates while being hurried towards the stage. All three members of the band were rather well-oiled by this point.

Pixie Geldof flaunted the smoking ban by having a fag in the venue. She also hung out with These New Puritans.

Finally, Carl Barat‘s bright yellow jumper proved to be the most annoying piece of clothing of the evening – it kept malting, with bits of fluff sticking to everyone he came into contact with. One victim was Bobby Gillespie, whose pristine suit was left looking rather shabby as a result.
