Soundtrack of David Bowie starring film ‘Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence’ to be reissued

Ryuichi Sakamoto’s BAFTA award winning score to get reissue

Ryuichi Sakamoto’s soundtrack for the David Bowie starring 1983 film Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence is to be reissued later this year.

Sakamoto, who won a BAFTA award for Best Film Music for his score, also starred alongside Bowie in the film.

Bowie plays a British solider, Major Jack Celliers, held captive in a Japanese prison camp during the Second World War. He develops an intimate relationship with one of the guards, Captain Yonoi, played by Sakamoto.

The reissue is due out on October 21 and is the latest release in Milan Records’ Nicolas Winding Refn Presents series. The Drive director has teamed up with the Italian record label to reissue a series of under appreciated film scores.

In an interview with FACT earlier this year, Sakamoto reflected on his time spent filming with Bowie.

“It was an amazing experience. He was very nice guy. Very straightforward,” he said.

Sakamoto also revealed that he thought about asking Bowie to collaborate on the soundtrack.

“I also sort of hesitated to ask David to work with me on the music at the time, because he seemed very concentrated on acting,” he said.
