DJ Premier announces European tour dates

Legendary DJ and producer plays London's The Forum on September 12

DJ Premier has announced a forthcoming tour of Europe that will see the legendary hip-hop producer perform with his newly formed five-piece band. The collective, currently named DJ Premier & his live band, will play 15 shows across Europe this September including a stop off at The Forum, London on September 12.

The group came together earlier this year at Preemo’s new HeadQcourterz studio in Queens, New York. The line-up boasts Brady Watt on bass, Lenny ‘The Ox’ Reece on drums, Takuya Kuroda on the horn and keys, Mark Williams on the trombone and keys as well, with Premier on the turntables. “When we put the band together, the key to any relationship is that you vibe together in a way that you can make magic happen,” the former Gang Starr DJ explained in a statement.

Soon after their formation, the band hit Japan to do a national tour, playing twice a day for four days straight. With Premier behind the turntables, mixer, and laptop, they jammed out tracks taken from the producer’s back catalogue, ranging from Gang Starr classics to more obscure Preemo productions, as well as a few classic soul numbers.

“Put us against anybody, we’re a problem,” asserted Premier. “I have fun doing a whole bunch of different styles with the band, because they fall into place so well, with everything that we’ve brought into the picture, no matter what it is.”

Last October, Premier released a free mixtape that features various deep album tracks, B-sides and other rarities from Gang Starr’s history. Titled ‘Gang Starr: True Heads Merch Mix’, the 88-minute release was made available to download via Premier’s website.

Gang Starr formed in 1985, going on to release six albums before the death of rapper Guru in 2010. The duo’s music form the backbone of Premier’s new show as he continues to honour his long-time partner. “I miss that dude so much, and we have a long and undeniable track record,” said Premier.
