He added: “I really don’t know how it happened. I had just come out of the club with a mate who had come to do the gig with me. I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has sent messages to me. I am looking forward to getting home.”

His head covered with a grey hooded top, Harvey left flanked by detectives who will take a statement about the assault. He will return to hospital later today for further treatment.

Harvey required plastic surgery yesterday to graft a piece of skin from his thigh to the back of his scalp. Police have not yet recovered the weapon used in the attack and do not know if it was a machete, an axe or knife.
