The track 'First Steps' will feature on the BBC's coverage of the Games
Elbow have unveiled a new track ‘First Steps’, which will feature on BBC coverage of the Olympics.
A 60-second clip of the track premiered last night as part of the first official video title sequence for the 2012 Olympic Games – watch it below. An extended version of the trail will be aired on BBC1 on Tuesday 3 July at 7:30pm.
The band were commissioned to write the theme back in November and the full track will be available to download from Friday 27 July. It features the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, a school choir from the band’s old school, and The London Community Gospel Choir.
Speaking to NME in a video which you can watch below, Elbow said it was a “massive thing” to be asked to write the song. Keyboardist Craig Potter said: “The closer the Olympics get, the more exciting it is and the more we realise what a massive thing it is to be asked to do that. So many people are going to hear it and it’s going to be in the background of some momentous events, so we’re really proud of it.”
Bassist Pete Turner also updated fans about the progress of their follow-up to Mercury Prize-nominated LP ‘Build A Rocket, Boys!’ “With the next album, we’re a little bit in there,” he said. “We’ve got about 10 ideas we’re going to work on and they’re sounding pretty good.” he added:
There’s no title or release date yet, we’re just knocking around idea and seeing where it’s going. It’s quite groove-based initially and there are more guitars than we would usually do, but things always change.
Elbow are playing at this year’s T In The Park, which is taking place July 6-8 in Balado Park, Kinross. To check the availability of T In The Park 2012 tickets and get all the latest listings, go to NME.COM/TICKETS now, or call 0871 230 1094.
