Watch band's exclusive Shockwaves NME Awards video interview

Elbow admitted that they thought they would never be invited to an award ceremony again – and even contemplated the fact that their recent album could have been their last.

Speaking after winning the Outstanding Contribution To British Music at the Shockwaves NME Awards 2009 last night (February 25), frontman Guy Garvey told NME.COM he was amazed by the band’s turnaround in fortunes.

“We got over the fact we wouldn’t be at awards ceremonies a long time ago, we were happily bobbling along, so it’s amazing it’s happened,” he said in an exclusive video interview. “None of us could have predicted what’s happened this year. There was a point where we thought this album could have been our last one… I’m not sure why it’s connected with so many people with the way it did, but we’re all over the moon that it did.”
