Singer took to the streets and posted footage of her experience online
Grammy award-winning singer Erykah Badu made just $3.60 (£2.25) busking on the streets of New York.
Evidence of the busking is seen in a video released by Badu. She is seen to adlib lyrics about needing to make some money while collecting money in her hat. No passers-by recognised Badu or her voice during the performance; she was only recognised at the start of the video before the experiment began.
In the seven-minute video, as seen above, Badu is seen to approach passers-by and sing directly to them in order to get some spare change, which is largely ignored. Four minutes into her set, the singer finally gets her first, small, donation.
After 41 minutes singing, she made a grand total of $3.60 and says that with “some initiative, you can make money”
Speaking about the public performance, Badu says: “I just always wanted to see what it would be like to sing for money on the streets, so what I’m gonna do is, I’m gonna find a good place… to stop and do it.”
