But it's bad news for * N Sync as they lose out to bitter rivals Backstreet Boys...

It was cheers for FAITH HILL and tears for *N SYNC at the AMERICAN MUSIC AWARDS in NEW YORK SHRINE AUDITORIUM last night (January 8)

Hill won in three categories, while *N Sync failed to take any gongs home, being defeated by Backstreet Boys in the race for the Best Band title.

Hill won the title of Best Female, and the Country Section’s Best Female and Best Album (for ‘Breathe’) awards.

She beat off competition from Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Celine Dion in the main Best Female category. The Best Male equivalent was won by Kid Rock, who beat Marc Anthony and Eminem. The other nominees in the Best Band category, where the boyband titans *N Sync and Backstreet Boys were tussling, were Creed.

But Creed found solace in the Best Album section, where ‘Human Clay’ defeated *N Sync’s ‘No Strings Attached’ and show host Britney Spears’ ‘Oops! I Did It Again!’.

In the Soul and R&B category, Destiny’s Child took the Best Band title, while Dixie Chicks were Best Band in the Country category. Dr Dre was victorious over Eminem in the hip hop section and DMX and Creed beat Limp Bizkit and Red Hot Chili Peppers in the Alternative category. Janet Jackson was presented with an Award of Merit.
