Fisherman’s Friends singer dies in hospital following incident at G Live venue

Trevor Grills is the second fatality after the band's tour manager was crushed to death on Saturday

A second man has died after an accident at the G Live venue in Guildford, Surrey over the weekend.

The singer of sea shanty group Fisherman’s Friends, Trevor Grills, died on Monday night (February 11) after he became trapped under a heavy metal door at the venue on Saturday morning, in the same accident that also killed the group’s tour manager Paul McMullen.

A statement from the band issued this morning reads: “The Fisherman’s Friends announce with great sadness that their friend and fellow band member Trevor Grills passed away last night as a result of severe head injuries inflicted during an accident on Saturday 9 February. Trevor was a much loved and valued friend to all of us and was an integral part of the Port Isaac community. He will be sadly missed. Our thoughts are with Trevor’s family at this very difficult time.”

The president of the band’s record label, Island Records added: “We are all deeply saddened at losing Trevor. The Fishermen’s Friends are exactly that: life long partners in all they do and our thoughts and prayers go out to them and Trevor’s family and friends.”

On Saturday, the band’s tour manager Paul McMullen was killed in the accident as the band were setting up for a gig at the G Live venue. McMullen suffered horrific leg injuries when a heavy steel door fell on him on Saturday afternoon (February 9), hours before the group were due to perform. Grills suffered serious head injuries and was taken to St George’s Hospital in Tooting, south London, but passed away last night.

Surrey Police is investigating the tragedy as is the Health and Safety Executive, which investigates accidents at work. A statement from the venue G Live issued over the weekend said: “This is a terribly sad day and our thoughts are with the family of the deceased at this incredibly difficult time.”

Fans have taken to the band’s Facebook page to pay tribute to the two men. One user, Stephen Gilbert, wrote: “So So Sorry. I am sure that the closeness of your group and of the community of Port Isaac will help you and the families of Trevor and Paul get through this tragedy.”

Another user Kirsty Lane added: “Absolutely devastating news – was so sorry to hear the news this morning. Thinking of you all and, of course, Trevor and Paul’s families x”

Fisherman’s Friends, who formed in the early 1990s, consists of three fishermen and six others who all grew up around the Cornish village of Port Isaac, and another member from Yorkshire. After years of performing sea shanties in Port Isaac, they were filmed for a documentary, after which they were offered a £1 million recording deal with Island Records. They have since played the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury.
