Patrick Wolf, Kid Harpoon and Jack Penate also join Florence And The Machine onstage

Florence And The Machine kicked off NME Calling by playing a unique gig with Jarvis Cocker, Patrick Wolf, Kid Harpoon and Jack Penate last night (November 27).

Billed as ‘Florence And Friends’, the gig at London‘s Tabernacle venue saw singer Florence Welch joined by guests throughout her 12-song set.

The evening’s climax saw Welch and Cocker duet on a version of Pulp‘s ‘Underwear’, before which Cocker joked “Do you think this is going to go well?!” to the audience. Backed by musicians including Cocker‘s former Pulp bandmate Steve Mackey (who produced Welch‘s debut single ‘Kiss With A Fist’), the duo also ran through a version of Florence And The Machine‘s ‘Girl With One Eye’.

“Tonight is all about collaborations, about people who I’ve worked with, and people who’ve inspired me,” Welch told the audience before inviting her first guest – Patrick Wolf – onstage to play ‘Cosmic Love’ and ‘Dog Days Are Over’.

Speaking to NME.COM after the show, Welch paid tribute to Wolf‘s ability to transform her songs.

“When Patrick turned up to rehearsals the other day and we played ‘Cosmic Love’, he just sat down at the piano and turned it into something I never even imagined,” she gushed. “He’s a genius.”

Next up, Welch was joined by Jack Penate, who she revealed went to the same school as her (“We entered the same talent contest and both lost!”). The duo, backed by Welch‘s Machine bandmates, ran through a version of her song ‘My Boy Builds Coffins’ before playing Penate‘s ‘Every Glance’.

Welch also performed with Kid Harpoon, who she explained was one of her earliest collaborators. “He was one of the first people I played with. Everyone went back to a party at his house and I sang this next song drunk in one of the rooms,” she revealed, before the duo launched into a cover of Bruce Springsteen‘s ‘I’m Goin’ Down’. They followed the song with a blistering, full band version of ‘Kiss With A Fist’.

The night’s final song, ‘You’ve Got The Love’, saw Welch joined by her band as well as Kid Harpoon, Penate, Mackey and Wolf.
