Frank Ocean’s manager speaks out over US store Target’s refusal to stock ‘Channel Orange’

Christian Clancy tweets of Target's decision: 'Interesting they also donate to non-equal rights organisations'

Frank Ocean‘s manager Christian Clancy has questioned US store Target‘s reasoning over their decision to not stock the singer’s debut album ‘Channel Orange’.

The US retail giant revealed earlier this week that it would not be carrying the Odd Future man’s debut record as it had been given exclusively to iTunes, but Clancy has now cast doubt on that decision.

Taking to Twitter, Ocean’s manager said that he found it “interesting” that the company’s owners had donated money “to non-equal rights organisations”, presumably referring to Target’s well-publicised dispute with Lady Gaga.

Gaga pulled out of a partnership deal with the store for a Lady Gaga Target deluxe album because in 2010 the store supported anti-gay marriage Minnesota Republican candidate for governor Tom Emmer with a $150,000 (£97,000) donation to fund campaign ads.

Target have since issued a statement about Clancy’s comments, saying: “At Target, we focus on offering our guests a wide assortment of physical CDs, so our selection of new releases is dedicated to physical CDs rather than titles that are released digitally in advance of the street date.”

They added: “The claims made about Target’s decision to not carry the Frank Ocean album are absolutely false. Target supports inclusivity and diversity in every aspect of our business. Our assortment decisions are based on a number of factors, including guest demand.”

They continued further: “Target has a longstanding tradition of supporting music and artistry that reflects the diverse landscape of American culture. Our history of partnering with diverse artists includes recent partnerships with a variety of musicians, such as Ricky Martin, B.o.B., and Gloria Estefan.”

Clancy has since clarified his comments, saying: “Note to self: Take your own advice. Emotional knee-jerk reacting isn’t the move.”

Ocean released his album on Tuesday (July 10) this week, pulling the release forward a week. It is set to chart in the UK Top 10 this weekend.
