Frank Turner adds support to Tin Pan Alley petition

Special conservation status is being sought for London's Denmark Street

Frank Turner has added his support to a petition seeking special conservation status for the Tin Pan Alley area of London.

The historic Denmark Street in Soho has been important to the city’s music scene for hundreds of years. Over recent years many important musical landmarks located close by have been demolished, such as live music venue The Astoria, which was closed in 2009 and demolished to make way for the Crossrail development.

The street is home to a number of guitar shops as well as the Grade II listed 12 Bar Club music venue, where artists such as Jamie T started out, and which has hosted gigs from Jeff Buckley, The Libertines, Joanna Newsom and more. The venue was built in 1635 and orginally used as a stable.

The petition is asking that the area be granted the same conservation status as nearby Hatton Gardens and Savile Row by Camden Council and English Heritage. The petition states of the 12 Bar Club: “It is a unique place, with Grade II Listing, and steeped in a history that should be preserved and maintained for future generations. Too many of London’s historical venues have been lost to developers or big businesses; we implore you not to let the 12 Bar Club be the next on that shameful list.”
