Frank Turner, The Gaslight Anthem for No Use For A Name frontman tribute album

Tony Sly passed away last summer at the age of 41

Frank Turner and The Gaslight Anthem are amongst the artists set to contribute to an album dedicated to Tony Sly, frontman of seminal punk band No Use For A Name.

Sly died on July 31, 2012, at the age of 41. The band played their final show as a tribute to Sly last September.

The tribute album is being compiled by Fat Mike of NOFX, who also runs the Fat Wreck Chords label. Other acts contributing the record include Bad Religion, Lagwagon, Dropkick Murphys, Rise Against, NOFX, Pennywise, and Bouncing Souls. The album is set for release in “a few months”.

In a statement – via Rocksound – Fat Mike wrote:

Tony was a fucking amazing songwriter and one of my dearest friends. His death was traumatic. Horrible. I’ve had friends die, but this was different. Tony wasn’t finished. I’ve been putting together this tribute comp for some time. It’s incredible how many bands have called me wanting to be on it. Its been my absolute privilege to put this together.

He continued: “What I wanted to show on this record is how amazing Tony’s songs are. You can tell a song is great when it can be done in any style and it’s still great. That’s what this comp is about.”

“All the bands are doing No Use for a Name songs or Tony Sly songs with their own take. It’s a real tribute to his songwriting… These bands were his closest friends and his favourite bands. I thank all of them for stepping up and showing their love and respect to Tony and his family.”

Sly joined No Use For A Name in 1989 when he was 18 years old and went on to release a total of nine studio albums with the band. The group’s last album came in 2008 with ‘The Feel Good Record Of The Year’, while they also released a number of EPs and split singles across their career.

In recent years, Sly had also begun a solo career and had released two albums under his own name, 2010’s ’12 Song Program’ and 2011’s ‘Sad Bear’. He also released two split acoustic albums with Lagwagon frontman Joey Cape.
