The Glasgow-based group's fourth album is due out late summer 2013
Franz Ferdinand played seven new songs at a tiny show in Glasgow last night (March 5).
Taking to the stage to rapturous applause from the packed crowd inside Nice’N’Sleazy, the Glasgow-based group opened their short 40-minute set with a trio of new songs – ‘Trees & Animals’, ‘Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action’ and ‘Fresh Strawberries’.
The hometown audience got into the groove during the aforementioned ‘Trees & Animals’, which boasted a stonking danceable riff, while on ‘Right Thoughts…’ frontman Alex Kapranos slipped up by forgetting some of the song’s lyrics. ‘Fresh Strawberries’ was an early favourite with its big, catchy chorus.
Franz then briefly interrupted their showcase of new songs to play their 2004 hit single ‘Matinee’ before playing ‘Stand On The Horizon’, another track likely to be included on their fourth album, which is due out late summer 2013. ‘Can’t Stop Feeling’, from their third album ‘Tonight: Franz Ferdinand’, was segued into a cover of Donna Summer’s ‘I Feel Love’.
“It’s been 10 years since we last played here,” said Kapranos. “Are you alright Nice’N’Sleazy?” he shouted before launching into ‘Evil Eye’ – and you can watch a fan-shot video of the band performing the track by scrolling to the bottom of the page and clicking ‘play’. This was followed by ‘Ulysses’ before the band finished with two new songs, ‘The Blackpool Illuminati’ and ‘I’ll Never Get Your Bullet Out Of My Head’.
“I loved them tonight. I thought they were really good,” said Glasgow resident Cara Connolly – the daughter of Scottish comedian Billy Connolly. “I like ‘Trees & Animals’ and there was another new song I liked because he said ‘ejaculation’ in it!”
Dale Smith from Dundee added: “I’ve been a fan since they first came out, so it’s great to see them in a small venue like this again. I thought ‘Evil Eye’ was the best new track played tonight – it was really catchy and fun.”
