GORKY’S ZYGOTIC MYNCI unveiled four new songs and a new drummer on their low-key tour around their native Wales this week.
The band debuted ‘How I Long’, ‘Stood On Gold’ and ‘Honeymoon With You’ – along with two unnamed instrumental tracks – at the 300-capacity Muni Arts Centre in Pontypridd last night (May 18).
And singer Euros Childs invited teenage solo support act Teflon Monkey onto the stage for a “Monkey-vs-Mynci soundclash” on a fourth new song, ‘Her Hair Hangs Long’.
New drummer Peter Richardson, 23, formerly of South Wales band Topper, was playing his first tour with the band, having previously helped out at the band’s mellow set for Radio 1 Live in Cardiff last October. The new line-up also played in Wrexham and Swansea this week, and the final show of the mini-tour is tonight in Narberth, West Wales.
Gruff and Guto from Super Furry Animals were in the audience at the Muni gig, and former Boo Radleys mainman Martin Carr attended Thursday night’s show at Swansea’s Patti Pavilion. The set featured material stretching back to Gorky’s‘ self-financed ‘Patio EP’ and included the singles ‘Sweet Johnny’, ‘Poodle Rockin” and ‘Spanish Dance Troupe’.
Gorky’s will play Robert Wyatt’s Meltdown at the Royal Festival Hall, London, on Sunday June 10.
They can also be seen on the second stage at the Carling Weekend Reading and Leeds festivals in August.
