Green Day: ‘Making an album is a lost art form’

Billie Joe Armstrong says he also believes his band are making 'a big statement' with their new LPs

Green Day‘s Billie Joe Armstrong has spoken about the band’s new album trilogy, ‘¡Uno!, ¡Dos!, ¡Tré!’ and has said he believes that making albums has become “a lost art form.”

The band’s new album trilogy, ‘¡Uno!, ¡Dos!, ¡Tré!’, will be released in three stages. ‘¡Uno!’ comes out on September 24, with the second LP, ‘¡Dos!’, coming out on November 12 and ‘¡Tré!’ on January 14, 2013.

Speaking about the three records to Classic Rock, Armstrong said he believed that “making an album is like a lost art form” and that “people are so addicted to just singles.”

He added that he felt the pop punk trio were making “a big statement” by putting out so much new music.

Asked about the band’s hopes for ‘¡Uno!, ¡Dos!, ¡Tré!’, he said: “It was time for a change and a new era. You just start with one simple song at a time, where less is more, but we made three albums and it ended up becoming epic. We wanted to make something that rocked really hard, and partied really hard, with a lot of meaning behind it. And a lot of soul. Hopefully we achieved that.”

He continued: “We’re based on tradition, we write tunes, we write melodies, and we do it in a way that rocks really hard. Whether it’s The Beatles, The Who or ’70s punk rock from England, or the Ramones or glam from the early ’70s like Bowie, it’s all over the place.”

He continued further: “It’s kind of what a rock’n’roll collage. I think there’s a big statement in putting out three albums, because right now people are so addicted to just singles. Making an album is like a lost art form. And where we come from is making albums – all our favourite bands make great albums.”

Last month the band announced a huge UK stadium show for next summer. The trio will headline London’s 60,000 capacity Emirates Stadium on June 1, 2013. Tickets for the show will go onsale at the end of this month on September 28.

The band also confirmed details of a huge US tour earlier this week, which will see them play a whopping 28 shows throughout November, December, January and February.

The runs of shows kick off in the relatively intimate surroundings of the Seattle Paramount Theater on November 26 and runs until February 8, when the band headline the 17,000 capacity Las Vegas MGM Grand Garden Arena.
