Green Day bass player Mike Dirnt mourns loss of birth mother

Band pay tribute to late Carol Alba Rowland

Green Day bass player Mike Dirnt has paid tribute to his birth mother, who passed away recently.

Dirnt posted a message titled ‘R.I.P. Carol Alba Rowland’ on Green Day’s official website in tribute to his mother, who did not raise him as a child. In fact, Dirnt met Rowland just one month before she passed away, as he explains in the post, after he tracked her down with the help of a friend.

“Today we mourn the loss of Carol Alba Rowland my birth mother!” Dirnt wrote. “As many of you know I was adopted. Over the last ten years I have sought her out with the help of a good friend, only to meet her one month before her passing! I was blessed to have this moment as surreal as it was. The irony of this life never seize to amaze me, being that we were neighbours my entire life! We were able to share a cup of coffee, a cigarette and some smiles. She was a beautiful woman with a huge smile a hot temper and a kind heart. I will miss her as I did before, only now with some memories and a picture to go with the place in my heart! Love you mom!!!”

Green Day cancelled all their scheduled live appearances at the end of 2012 following Billie Joe Armstrong entering rehab. However, the band have confirmed they will play their 2013 dates as planned as Armstrong has returned to full health.

In a statement on their website, the band wrote: “We want to thank everyone for hanging in with us for the last few months. We are very excited to hit the road and see all of you again, though we regret having to cancel more shows.”

Green Day released three albums, titled ‘Uno!’, ‘Dos!’ and ‘Tre!’ in 2012.
