Grimes ‘halfway done’ with ‘chill, synthy’ new record

Musician hints at release of 'Art Angels' B-sides

Grimes has revealed that she is working on new music.

The experimental-pop musician (real name Claire Boucher) released her fourth album ‘Art Angels’ last November. It was named NME’s Album Of The Year 2015.

Speaking to Rolling Stone recently, Grimes said: “I’m actually halfway done with another record. I’m not committing to anything, but I have a bunch of B-sides I kind of want to finish. Plus, I’ve been making a bit of new music.”

Boucher went on to suggest that her next release will be a collection of B-sides originally recorded during her ‘Art Angels’ sessions.

“You know how Lana Del Rey put out ‘Paradise Edition’ after ‘Born To Die’? It would be like that. There are songs I seriously considered for ‘Art Angels’, but they fucked with the momentum when I tried to put them on the record.”

Asked what the new music sounds like, Boucher said: “With ‘Art Angels’, it was all like [growls]. This would be more chill vibes, downtempos, synth-y shit. That makes it sound boring. It’s not boring.”

Speaking to NME last year about her album topping the year-end list, Grimes said: “Everything seems so insane that I’m currently unable to process it all. Right now it’s rather dream-like.”

Going into detail about the album, Grimes admitted that ‘Art Angels’ was partly a response to how she felt she was treated after releasing her ‘Visions’ album in 2012.

“With ‘Visions’ it became easy to say, ‘Grimes, she’s so cute. It’s fun music to put on at a fashion shoot,'” she laughed. “Now I want people to engage. I’m less afraid of saying things now. I used to be so scared, I was turning the vocals down and drenching them in reverb. On this record I don’t give a fuck anymore.”
