Shaun Ryder tells ‘smart arse’ reality TV critics to ‘fuck off’

Happy Mondays man has appeared in 'I'm A Celebrity' and 'Come Dine With Me'

Shaun Ryder has spoken out against anyone who questions his legitimacy as a musician for appearing in reality TV shows like Come Dine With Me and I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!.

The Happy Mondays and Blake Grape frontman recently told Mojo magazine: “I don’t give a fuck if some young smart arse goes, ‘Hey, you’re not a real musician, ‘cos you did Come Dine With Me,’. It’s like, Fuck off! Let’s see where you are 10, 15 years down the line, you sad c*nt.”

Ryder appeared on a celebrity Christmas special of the Channel 4 reality show in 2014, coming joint 2nd with 23 points alongside Helen Flanagan and Kirsten O’Brien, losing to comedian Mark Dolan. Prior to this in 2010, he entered the jungle as part of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, finishing as runner-up.

“I only went in the jungle ‘cos it was good enough for fucking John [Lydon], and because of the 100 grand I got. But that went to paying lawyers,” Shaun said, referring to Sex Pistols lead singer Johnny Rotten who took part in the third series of the show in 2004.

Ryder fought a legal battle with the former management of his band Black Grape, resulting in his income being frozen. “As far as I was concerned, they’d had me over. I then went on for 13 years of having 100 per cent of my income wiped up.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Ryder discusses his music influences, the rise and decline of the Happy Mondays and getting clean after years of battling a drug addiction.
