HMV to close flagship technology store in Islington

The shop is the latest to close as new owner Hilco tries to turnaround the retailer's fortunes

HMV‘s flagship technology store in Islington, North London will close at the end of this month (January 25).

The entertainment retailer’s former management decided to strengthen its technology offering to try and improve the shop’s fortunes in 2011, but new owners Hilco will now close the store.

According to Retail Week, an HMV spokesman said the closure was “not indicative of a change in direction” of the retailer’s strategy, which remains technology-focused.

Record of the Day reports that stores in Newport, Kettering and Leamington are to close this month as Hilco continues its plan to turn around the chain, which fell into administration in January 2013.

In September 2013, the retailer returned to its Oxford Street flagship and in October launched its digital strategy and new Android and iOS apps which allow users to download songs instantly using image and sound recognition software.
