Singer says official version of ‘Old Friends 4 Sale’ was ‘too tame’
Hot Chip singer Alexis Taylor has covered rare Prince song ‘Old Friends 4 Sale’, saying the official version of the song was too tame.
Prince recorded the song for potential inclusion on his 1986 ‘Parade’, but it was eventually only released in 1999 on Prince’s rarities album ‘The Vault: Old Friends 4 Sale’, which featured new recordings of unreleased vintage songs.
Taylor covered ‘Old Friends 4 Sale’ with its original lyrics for Manchester live video channel Low Four. He said: “Prince changed the lyrics and re-recorded an inferior version, which was much more tame lyrically. My cover is of the original unreleased version, which has circulated on bootlegs since the late ‘80s.”
Taylor also covered Whitney Houston’s ‘I Look To You’, the title track of her final album from 2009, for the Low Four session along with Hot Chip’s ‘So Much Further To Go’ from last year’s album ‘Why Make Sense?’ and songs from Taylor’s new solo album ‘Piano’.
Hot Chip play at BBK Live in Spain and Portugese festival NOS Alive this weekend, before featuring at Festival No 6, Bestival an On Blackheath festivals in September.
Taylor’s Hot Chip bandmate Joe Goddard remixed Honne’s single ‘Someone That Loves You’ in May.
