Howling Bells play Shockwaves NME Awards Show

London gig is Aussies' biggest yet

Howling Bells played their Shockwaves NME Awards Show at London’s KOKO tonight (February 25) – their biggest headlining gig to date.

Beginning with ‘The Bell Hit’, the band wowed the packed venue with tracks including ‘Low Happening’ and ‘Setting Sun’.

Before ‘Wishing Stone’, singer and guitarist Juanita Stein told the crowd: “This is my favourite venue in the world! You think I’m lying just to make you feel better? I’m not – this is my favourite city in the world!”

At one point technical difficulties forced the band to tell stories on stage in an attempt to pass the time. They asked the audience to shout out topics of conversation and Stein then revealed her opinions on potatoes and Britney Spears.

Speaking to NME.COM after the show, Juanita Stein said: “I loved it! It was a little bit overwhelming. We’re so incredibly passionate about what we do, and when you find your audience, and they’re all there because they connect with your music, how is that not an incredible experience? It was great!”

Earlier in the evening, Vincent Vincent and The Villains performed a set of their 50s-influenced pop.

Vincent, dressed in what appeared to be a black matador’s jacket, cajoled the initially quiet crowd into dancing along to tracks including ‘Johnny Two Bands’ and ‘The End Of The Night’.

Before Vincent Vincent and The Villains, Wakefield four piece Last Gang showcased their Clash-esque rock to KOKO, performing, among other tracks, ‘Youth Run The City’ and the anthemic ‘Love And Hate’.

Opening proceedings tonight were South London’s Indigo Moss, who played a semi-acoustic, dark country-rock set, including songs ‘Swimming’ and ‘Start Over Again’.
