Hurts on their new album ‘Exile’: ‘Dirtier. Fuzzier. Wilder’

Theo Hutchcraft reveals all the darkness behind their second LP in this week's NME

Hurts have revealed that their new album is, in singer Theo Hutchcraft’s words: “Dirtier. Fuzzier. Wilder.”

In this week’s NME, which is on newsstands now or available digitally, we head inside the band’s decauched Berlin party lair to unearth the doom-laden depths of their second album ‘Exile’.

“I remember being in Miami, in a car full of girls. Id been up for days,” Hutchcraft recalls. “Suddenly, my nose just exploded. Blood streaming down my face. Just at that moment we came to a police roadblock. The only thing I could think to do was mop up the blood with banknotes. So I stuffed them up my nose, wiped the mess away as best I could. We were waved through the roadblock and ended up at a party at [Transformers director] Michael Bay’s mansion. I never actually met him, though. We had to leave in a hurry because my mate had thrown up in his swimming pool. Greatest night out ever.”

Speaking about the album’s title, which Hutchcraft reveals was thought up while he was sitting in a bar in Osaka, he says ‘Exile’ came from “that sense of being in a weird place. Freedom, fear, isolation, joy, religion, punishment, the decadence that comes with exile – always being on tour, always being far from home. It did feel like we were on the run. Always chasing something.”

Hurts are set to release their second album on March 11. The album’s first single ‘Miracle’, will be released the day before (March 10). Scroll down the page to listen to it.
