BBC News presenter Huw Edwards jokingly claimed that he “brought grime into the UK” during an interview with BBC Radio 1Xtra DJ Charlie Sloth earlier today (December 21) – watch footage of the conversation below.
Edwards and Sloth have appeared together on the BBC’s platforms a number of times in recent months, with the pair striking up an unlikely friendship.
The two met again earlier today on the BBC News Channel, with Edwards interviewing Sloth about his successes as a DJ on BBC Radio.
During the conversation the pair talked about the BBC’s coverage of grime, with the newsreader then offering a tongue-in-cheek assessment of his own contribution towards the elevated status of the genre in the country.
“People don’t realise this – and I don’t like to say this to you Charlie, because I feel like you’re going to be a bit dismissive – but I kind of feel that I brought grime into the UK,” Edwards said. “When I said on the News at Ten, ‘Let’s talk about grime’, it happened.”
Sloth agreed, and offered his fist in acknowledgement – which, after a short pause, Edwards returned after claiming that Sloth was “riding on my wave”.

“It kind of did have a massive impact on the scene,” Sloth said in response. “When the big bossman of news is talking about grime… for those that are not in the know, they want to be in the know – because Huw knows about it.”

Earlier this year, Huw Edwards appeared on screen in silence for four minutes during a transmission of BBC News at Ten due to a technical fault.
