Ex-Smith lines up big names for cancer fundraiser

Collaborations expected at Manchester charity gig

Ian Brown, The Charlatans and Echo And The Bunnymen are the first bands to be confirmed for the forthcoming Manchester Versus Cancer gig.

The gig, organised by ex-Smiths’ bassist Andy Rourke, is set to take place at the MEN Arena on March 30.

Last year’s Versus Cancer gig saw collaborations between some of the city’s legendary musicians, including the first reunion of Johnny Marr and Rourke since 1987.

The two Smiths’ stars performed versions of their classic ‘There Is A Light That Never Goes Out’ and ‘How Soon Is Now?’.

New Order also performed an entire set of Joy Division tracks at the event.

Tickets for the Versus Cancer gig went on sale today (January 12), with proceeds going towards Christie Hospital.

On January 13, Rourke is staging an attempt at setting a new world record for the largest group busk in Manchester city centre.
