Interpol treat Oxegen to ‘model’ performance

Band shine amongst the stars at Irish festival

Interpol shone as the ‘stars’ came out at the Oxegen Festival tonight (July 11).

The festival site had been buzzing all day with the news that singer Paul Banks had been accompanied by supermodel girlfriend Helena Christensen, and she duly watched the set from the side of the stage.

Banks greeted the crowd with a humble, “hey, thank you”, before his band tore into ‘Pioneer To The Falls’.

The group then mixed material from their three albums as the sun set, barely pausing – save for the odd “thank you” – as the large crowd danced and sang along despite a cold wind blowing across the site.

After playing ‘No I In Threesome’, Banks acknowledged the audience size, declaring: “Thanks everybody, it’s good to be back at Oxegen, this is a great crowd.”

The band then performed ‘Lighthouse’ with just Banks‘ vocals, Daniel Kessler‘s brittle guitar and a spartan piano accompaniment, before the rest of the band returned to the stage for the song’s conclusion.

Interpol then turned the intimate mood on its head with a pounding version of ‘Not Even Jail’ that got the crowd clapping and bouncing along.

Later, ‘Evil’ triggered another loud sing-a-long before the band wrapped things with ‘Roland’.

“That’s us,” declared Banks as he left the stage. “Thank you so much.”
