The Maccabees and The Rakes also played energetic sets at the bash
Despite their early billing at the festival – coming onstage at 3pm (BST) – The Maccabees pulled a sizable crowd into the Big Top tent.
Frontman Orlando Weeks was in a chatty mood throughout, at one point telling the crowd: “I didn’t expect to see this many people here – thank you so much!”
The band’s set focused heavily on their recent album ‘Wall Of Arms’, with ‘No Kind Words’ and ‘Love You Better’ going down particularly well.
Over on the Main Stage, The View got the crowd singing by playing a hit-laden set, drawing on tracks from their two albums.
The Scots were clearly having a good time, with bassist Kieren Webster running to the edge of the stage, pointing and waving at fans throughout.
On ‘Covers’, the band were joined by Paolo Nutini, who also sang the track on The View‘s second album ‘Which Bitch?’. However, it was tracks such as ‘5Rebbecca’s’, ‘Wasted Little DJ’s’ and set closer ‘Shock Horror’ that really got the crowd singing.
The Rakes‘ mid-afternoon set in the Big Top tent saw the Londoners wow fans as they played tracks from their three albums.
Singer Alan Donohoe stood centrestage throughout the gig, dancing animatedly around his mic stand as the band played behind him. A number of tracks from new album ‘Klang’ went down well with the audience, including ‘1989’, while older songs including ’22 Grand Job’ and ‘Retreat’ provided the biggest singalongs of the band’s set.
In the Big Top tent, Calvin Harris previewed his new album ‘Ready For The Weekend’ and also played favourites from his debut ‘I Created Disco’ including ‘Acceptable In The 80s’, ‘Colours’ and ‘Merrymaking At My Place’.
The Scots singer thanked the crowd for their support during his set, and seemed surprised at the amount of people who had turned up to see him.
White Lies drew a massive crowd to watch their Main Stage set. Dressed in black, frontman Harry McVeigh said little during the band’s performance, though the audience’s ecstatic reaction to single ‘Death’ forced a grin on his face.
Showcasing their album ‘To Lose My Life’, the band played intensely throughout the set, blitzing through songs including the album’s title track and ‘Farewell To The Fairground’.
Frontman Paul Smith led the band on to the stage, kicking off proceedings by playing an amped-up version of ‘Grafitti’. During the song’s instrumental interlude, Smith gestured to the huge crowd to “have it”.

Other songs played by the Newcastle-based act included ‘Our Velocity’, ‘A Certain Trigger’ and ‘Let’s Get Clinical’.
Wearing his trademark bowler hat, Smith geed up the crowd by executing a series of scissor kicks. The band ended their set with ‘Apply Some Pressure’, with Smith instructing the entire audience to enjoy themselves for the rest of the evening.
