Jack White’s Third Man Records to release 800-song compilation from Paramount Records archives

Release comes with include a special USB drive containing indexes to help explore the humongous collection

Jack White‘s Third Man Records are to release Paramount Records back catalogue on vinyl, starting from next month.

Established in 1917, Paramount Records was home to artists such as Louis Armstrong, Ma Rainey, Fletcher Henderson, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Jelly Roll Morton, King Oliver and Ethel Walters. Third Man will release a comprehensive 800-song collection of the label’s material from its first decade in existence titled ‘The Rise and Fall of Paramount Records, Volume One (1917-27)’ on October 29.

The huge release is a joint project by Third Man and Revenent Records in America. Rolling Stone reports that the collection comes with include a special USB drive containing a unique music and image app with myriad indexes that will let you easily explore the humongous collection. Included in the package will be 200 restored original adverts and images from the label, two books and six 180-gram vinyl LPs, featuring a more manageable 87 songs from the period.

Speaking about the project, which involved between 30-50 people compiling and packaging the label’s material, Revenant co-founder Dean Blackwood says he convinced White to get involved by showing him a timeline of Paramount’s releases. “That was really the revelatory moment,” he says “Just sort of staring at that timeline on my wall, like, ‘Why hasn’t this story been told?'”

White is currently working on new songs with his band The Dead Weather, a tweet from his Third Man Records label revealed last week (August 29). The band are currently holed up in the Third Man studio in Nashville.

The Dead Weather is made up of White, The Kills’ Alison Mosshart, Dean Fertita of Queens Of The Stone Age and Jack Lawrence of The Greenhornes and The Raconteurs. They released their debut album, ‘Horehound’, in 2009 and followed it in 2010 with ‘Sea Of Cowards’.
