Singer launches countermotion in court, say reports
Jack White has responded to the restraining order taken out by his former wife Karen Elson by launching a countermotion in court, according to reports.
Rolling Stone says that the singer has contested the claims made by Elson, who accused White of “harassment” and “bullying behaviour”. It was recently reported that the pair are at odds over the custody of their two children, with Elson alleging that her ex-husband is not fit to be a parent.
She claimed that White contacted her lawyer in “an inappropriate and aggressive manner” and she “fears for her and the children’s safety as a result of this harassment”. Elson also alleged that White has a violent temper and had sent her intimidating emails and text messages.
White has now launched a countermotion, which was filed by his lawyer in Davidson County Court in Nashville yesterday (August 2). “The reason for filing this response is that Mr White does not want to be portrayed as something he is not, violent towards his wife and children,” it reads.
It also responds to Elson’s request that White undergo a psychiatric examination, describing it as “inflammatory… disingenuous, fraudulent and retaliatory and simply designed to malign him in the public record or to gain an upper hand in this litigation.”
The singer also claims that Elson’s accusations are weakened as, until recently, she made it clear she thought he was a good father. It claims she sent him an email on May 19 in which she describes him as a “amazing father” and says she is “so glad we had these kids together”, and felt comfortable enough to leave their two children in his care for 10 days while she visited New York just a day after signing her restraining order affidavit.
“One who was truly fearful of another would not leave their children alone with that person for 10 days,” it says. “The truth of the matter is that Ms. Elson is not fearful for herself or the parties’ minor children.”
It was reported yesterday (August 2) that White had allegedly called The Black Keys‘ Dan Auerbach a “copy” and an “asshole” in an email he sent to Elson. The email, which was submitted by Elson as part of her petition for a restraining order, allegedly finds White complaining that she has enrolled their two children, seven-year-old Scarlett and six-year-old Henry, into the same school as Auerbach’s daughter, five-year-old Sadie.
“My concern with Auerbach is because I don’t want the kids involved in any of that crap,” it reads. “That’s a possible twelve fucking years I’m going to have to be sitting in kids chairs next to that asshole with other people trying to lump us in together. He gets yet another free rein to follow me around and copy me and push himself into my world.”
White and Elson have a hearing on August 29 over a separate dispute involving their two children.
