Jack White’s Third Man Records to open new Detroit store

Retail outlet to open by Thanksgiving

Jack White has announced that his label Third Man Records is to open a new store in the former White Stripes’ home town of Detroit.

The store is a joint venture between White and retail company Shinola. The singer and guitarist recently purchased the Cass Corridor building, which houses Shinola’s headquarters, and he’ll open the Third Man outlet by Black Friday – the US retail holiday that falls the day after Thanksgiving and marks the beginning of the holiday shopping season.

“From the great visual artists like Gordon Newton to the music of the Gories, and the birth of the Detroit garage rock scene, the Corridor has nurtured Detroit’s soul and inventiveness for decades,” White said in a press release.

“That spirit pushes forward with Shinola’s passion and will come full circle for the artists of the Corridor that work with Third Man Records to plant a new foundation there to help keep that creative spirit alive for decades to come.”

Third Man already operates a store in Nashville, Tennessee.

Having recently gone on hiatus from live performing, White is currently involved in a number of different projects and was among the big name musicians who helped launch Tidal this year. He recently defended his involvement in the company following criticisms that have included suggestions that its model will only favour mainstream acts, and that it’s little more than a vanity project.

In a Q+A with fans about Tidal on his Third Man Records website, White was asked whether or not it’s fair to charge a premium price for access to music is fair.

“How much did you pay for that last movie you saw at the theatre? And how much did that movie cost to make? Don’t devalue musicians man, support them,” he responded.

“Making records is expensive, believe us, I don’t see people saying we should go to the movies for free, or Netflix should be free. That state of music is in flux, be on the side of supporting creativity, not taking from it. this gives you that chance.”
