Jack White is back with two new songs and reveals more details about new album ‘Boarding House Reach’

White returns with 'Connected By Love' and 'Respect Commander'

Jack White has released two new songs today: lead single ‘Connected By Love’ and B-side track ‘Respect Commander’. Scroll below to hear both and watch the video for ‘Connected By Love’.

In December, White previewed new music in a bizarre teaser video for his next album. White has now revealed that his new album is titled ‘Boarding House Reach’ and that it was recorded in New York City, Los Angeles and Nashville. It’s the first time White has recorded an album in NYC or LA, and features a brand new group of musicians. A release date is not yet known.

Of ‘Connected By Love’, White has told Rolling Stone: “I just started humming notes out loud, staring out the window. After that, you really can’t explain it. You just have to get out of the way and let it happen. And you don’t really notice it as it’s happening.”

White explained that he first thought the song was “maybe some old melody I’m copying from some old song from 40 years ago, subconsciously – those are all the perils of trying to, you know, bring something new into the universe.”

He also revealed that the song originally featured the lyric “I’m infected by love”, but he didn’t want listeners to think he was singing about STDs. “I thought ‘Well, people won’t get that metaphor — they’ll turn that into, ‘Well, Do you have an STD, or something?’,” he said. “It might hurt the rest of the messages of the song if I kept that as the main thing. So I changed ‘Infected’ to ‘Connected’ and then started to feed off of that.”

“I’m still kind of learning about that song,” White added. “The melody was coming straight from my gut. You start putting yourself into this character’s mindset and see what you can make out of it. It’s almost like someone pushed you out on stage on a Broadway show, through the curtains and all of the sudden you are told ‘Your name is this.’ you know?”

The former White Stripes man last released a solo record in 2014 with ‘Lazaretto‘. He recently revealed that he had been working on his follow-up LP last summer, joking that it would be “good gardening music or roofing music or, you know, back-alley stabbing music”.

White later issued an update, saying that the album was “practically done” while describing the record as “bizarre”.

White told Billboard that his next record was “practically done, just some finishing touches”. He added: “It’s a bizarre one. I’ve just got to let it settle. I need to listen to it by myself. I haven’t been able to listen to it by myself for a while.”

According to recent reports, the album will be released during the first half of 2018. However, this has not been officially confirmed.

Jack White also recently announced that he has signed his first rapper to Third Man Records.
