Boyband's 'Midnight Memories' is due to be released a week after Bugg's 'Shangri La'

Jake Bugg has said he hopes his album doesn’t go to Number One in the Official UK Album Chart as he doesn’t want to be knocked off the top spot by One Direction.

Bugg’s new album, ‘Shangri La’, is due to be released on November 18. The following week, the former X Factor runners-up will release their new record, ‘Midnight Memories’.

He told Q magazine: “I’ve seen that One Direction’s album is out the week after mine. So the question is, ‘Do I wanna be Number One or not?’ Cos if it does go to Number One that means they’ll knock me off the top spot. I mean, what can you say? ‘Yeah yeah, ha ha, they knocked you off’.’ I mean, it would be nice to have another but you can’t get greedy now, can you?”

Earlier this year, Bugg caused some mild controversy when he was quoted in Shortlist magazine describing One Direction as “terrible”.

The pop band’s Louis Tomlinson then hit back on Twitter, writing “Hi @JakeBugg do you think slagging off boy bands makes you more indie?” while his bandmate Niall Horan added: “Really buggs me that artists we’re fans of, flip on us in the press!”

Bugg has since calmed in opinion on the band, and applauded the group for their longevity so far in a cynical music industry. He said: “‘I’m sure they’re really nice lads. I just don’t like their music. But it’ll be interesting to see how that all works out cos as a boy band, they seem to have hung around longer than most do. I’m just intrigued to see how it goes.”
