Singer discusses plans for follow-up to his debut LP
Jake Bugg has said it would be “dishonest” if he tried to sing about life on a council estate on his second album.
The Nottingham singer-songwriter is currently working on the follow-up to his self-titled debut LP and, in an interview with the Daily Star, said that he wanted to write songs which would give fans an “insight” into how his life has changed, rather than rehashing the subject matter of his first album.
He said: “I want to give an insight to the same people who liked the first record about what my life is like now. That’s not really a change from my first album, because all I’m doing is writing about my life. I’d never left Nottingham when I wrote those first songs, but I’ve travelled the world and hopefully people can relate to what I’ve gone through.”
He then added: “Whether people still like it is up to them, but it’d be dishonest if I tried to write about life on a council estate again. All I can do is stick to describing what my life is like, same as before, and do it honestly.”
Bugg, who unveiled two new songs titled ‘Slumville Sunrise’ and ‘All Your Reasons’ at Glastonbury last month, recently told NME that his second studio LP would be more “mature” than his debut effort, although he added: “I don’t want it to be too mature because I’m 19 but I want it to sound like it’s progressing.”
Speaking about the themes of the record, meanwhile, he revealed: “I can’t really sing about the same things I sung about on the first album because that would be very dishonest. There’s a lot of people that come from where I’m from that don’t get those opportunities so I think I should give them a bit of an insight of what I’ve experienced so far and what’s been going on.”
Jake Bugg will tour the UK in October. The dates will follow appearances at Reading and Leeds Festivals, as well as slots supporting The Stone Roses over the summer.
