James Blake accidentally introduced as ‘James Blunt’ at Mercury Prize ceremony

Lauren Laverne made the faux pas at the ceremony at London's Roundhouse

Mercury Prize host Lauren Laverne accidentally introduced nominated artist James Blake as “James Blunt” at the awards ceremony at London’s Roundhouse tonight (October 30).

The evening’s host mistakenly called out the name of the ‘You’re Beautiful’ singer to the amusement of the crowd as electronica artist Blake – whose second album ‘Overgrown’ eventually won this year’s gong – took to the stage to perform the song ‘Retrograde’.

In the break between artist performances and the winner announcement, Laverne tweeted about her “three letter” mishap. She wrote:

Never felt better than I do tonight about artists who have fractionally dissimilar fore and surnames. #MercuryPrize #Irony

As expected David Bowie did not perform earlier this evening and a film of the James Murphy remix of Bowie’s track ‘Love Is Lost’ played instead. Laura Mvula remains favourite to win this year’s Mercury Prize according to the latest odds from William Hill. When the nominees for the annual album award were announced earlier this year, Mvula’s album ‘Sing To The Moon’ was listed as 16/1 to win the prize. However, with not long until the winner is announced, William Hill has her odds at 8/11, the biggest price change in the history of the prize. The winner will be revealed at 10pm.

Speaking about the change in odds, which puts the soul singer ahead of Disclosure and Foals, William Hill spokesman Joe Crilly says, “Laura Mvula has been the subject of the biggest price change in Mercury betting history and we cannot see anyone winning the award ahead of her.”

Disclosure‘s debut album ‘Settle’ is currently second favourite to win with odds of 5/1, while Foals’s 2013 album ‘Holy Fire’ is third favourite at 11/2. Betting on David Bowie’s ‘The Next Day’ is at 7/1 with Arctic Monkeys‘ ‘AM’ a little further behind at 16/1.

The latest odds according to William Hill:
