Jamie T: ‘People get weirded out by my social anxiety’

Singer also reveals his new album’s Clash influence

Jamie T has revealed how people are still “weirded out” by his social anxiety disorder, but says it’s now easier for him to discuss it than it was at the start of his career.

The singer openly discussed how he suffers from social anxiety when he released his debut album ‘Panic Prevention’ in 2007, but says now mental health wasn’t something musicians were encouraged to talk about publicly.

T, full name Jamie Treays, told The Guardian: “It’s more acceptable to talk about it now than it was then. People were a bit iffy about it. I continued to speak about it on other records, and people tended to be ‘What, are you still going through that?’ People get weirded out about it, but it seemed natural for me to talk about it.”

New album ‘Trick’ is out on September 2, two years after ‘Carry On The Grudge’. Admitting that new song ‘Robin Hood’ is influenced by The Clash guitarist Mick Jones, Treays said: “I think everyone’s lucky that three-quarters of the album doesn’t sound like Mick Jones, because at one point it fucking did. I was just so chuffed that I could write something similar that sounded half-good.”

Treays also revealed that new song ‘Tescoland’ was about his failure to break America. He said: “I can’t get arrested in the US. My manager told me it’s because my music has subtleties that the Americans don’t get, like irony and sarcasm. Which made me laugh, because that’s such a bullshit comment. Anyone who’s watched Seinfeld knows that’s completely ridiculous.”
