Janelle Monáe comes out as pansexual

"I consider myself to be a free-ass motherfucker," she says

Janelle Monáe has come out as pansexual in a new interview.

Monáe’s sexuality has long been the subject of speculation. In 2013, the singer addressed such rumours, telling Sway In The Morning: “I keep my personal life very much to myself. I want everybody to focus on my music. I also don’t want to let anybody down.”

“I want women to still be attracted to me,” she added at the time. “Go get my album! I want men to still be attracted to me so I have to be political in this. So I can’t really tell y’all!”

Now, in a new Rolling Stone interview, Monáe has come out as pansexual.

“Being a queer black woman in America, someone who has been in relationships with both men and women – I consider myself to be a free-ass motherfucker,” Monáe said.

Revealing that she initially identified as bisexual, Monáe added that she then “read about pansexuality and was like, ‘Oh, these are things that I identify with too'”.

“I’m open to learning more about who I am,” said Monáe.

However, Monáe refused to comment on rumours that she is dating Westworld and Marvel star Tessa Thompson.

Monáe’s third studio album ‘Dirty Computer’ will be released on Friday (April 27), and will mark her first full-length LP release since 2013’s ‘The Electric Lady’.

The album features guest spots from Grimes, Pharrell Williams, Brian Wilson and Zoë Kravitz, as well as the singles ‘PYNK’‘Django Jane’ and ‘Make Me Feel’.

The musician previously explained that the five-year gap between albums was largely a consequence of the death of her close friend Prince in 2016.

Earlier this week, Monáe announced a new set of tour dates in support of her new album.
