The rapper can now negotiate contracts for his Roc Nation Sports company
Jay-Z has become a certified sports agent.
Earlier this spring, the rapper’s entertainment company, Roc Nation, got into the sports agency business with the creation of Roc Nation Sports. The company, which the rapper set up with with Roc Nation president Juan Perez and the Creative Artists Agency, currently represents New York Yankees’ second baseman Robinson Cano, New York Giants’ wide receiver Victor Cruz, and basketball player Skylar Diggins.
However, in order to be allowed to represent athletes during contract negotiations, you need to be certified by the unions of the sports leagues. As CBS reports, Jay-Z and Roc Nation made the first steps towards that process yesterday (June 20), when the National Basketball Players Association certified Jay-Z and Juan Perez to negotiate contracts with NBA teams. The NBPA is the first sports union to grant Jay-Z certification. Jay-Z, Perez and Roc Nation Sports VP Rich Kleiman also applied for certification with the MLBPA, and a decision on those applications is expected soon.
It was previously reported that the NFL was investigating whether the rapper and entrepreneur violated league rules involving the recruitment of New York Jets draft pick Geno Smith. As Jay-Z hadn’t been certified as an agent by the NFL Players Association, he was prohibited from being involved in the recruitment of prospective clients.
Earlier this week, Jay-Z announced that his new album new album ‘Magna Carta Holy Grail’ will be released in July 4, with one million copies being given away for free 72 hours prior to release to Samsung Galaxy smartphone users.
