Rapper will oversee the official soundtrack to film adaptation of the F Scott Fitzgerald novel
Jay-Z is to act as executive producer and release original material on The Great Gatsby soundtrack, it has been confirmed.
A statement released yesterday, via Reuters, reveals that Jay-Z will oversee the official soundtrack to the film adaptation of F Scott Fitzgerald novel, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan and is directed by Baz Luhrmann. The movie is due to be released in May. It will feature other artists in addition to Jay-Z with composer Craig Armstrong stating that “a varied collection of the world’s most talented and compelling musical artists” will appear.
“Luhrmann and Jay-Z were introduced by Leonardo DiCaprio, and this led to a two-year collaborative effort,” the statement reads. “During this time, Jay-Z worked with Luhrmann and his team to capture, translate and contrast the feelings of Fitzgerald’s decadent era with that of our own, using hip-hop and jazz, music contemporary and period, to bring two distinct American moments to simultaneous life.”
Sharing the story of why he was keen to work with Jay-Z, Lurhmann states, “Fitzgerald was a pioneer, famed and controversial for using the then-new and explosive sound called jazz in his novels and short stories-not just as decoration, but to actively tell story using the immediacy of pop culture. He coined the phrase ‘the Jazz Age’. So, the question for me in approaching Gatsby was how to elicit from our audience the same level of excitement and pop-cultural immediacy toward the world that Fitzgerald did for his audience? And in our age, the energy of jazz is caught in the energy of hip-hop. Not only is Jay-Z a great artist, full stop, but I had heard that he was a great collaborator.”
Jay-Z himself adds: “As soon as I spoke with Baz and Leonardo, I knew this was the right project. The Great Gatsby is that classic American story of one’s introduction to extravagance, decadence and illusion. It’s ripe for experimentation and ready to be interpreted with a modern twist.”
There is currently no words as to which other artists will feature on the soundtrack, though Lana Del Rey dropped hints about possibly featuring alongside Jay-Z earlier this year. Jay-Z will appear in the UK later this year when he and Justin Timberlake take over the Wireless festival in London, each playing a solo show before coming together on a third date for a joint show under the name ‘Legends of the Summer’.
