Bandmate Ashton Merrygold confides band's fading fortunes contributed to break-up
JLS member Oritsé Williams can be seen breaking down in tears on tonight’s (April 26) episode of Channel 4’s Alan Carr: Chatty Man.
It happens while the boyband member is talking about their split, which was announced this week. JLS have since been accused of announcing the break-up as a means of creating greater demand for their forthcoming farewell tour.
However, another member, Ashton Merrygold, tells host Carr that the split is real – and is a case of them responding to the band’s fading fortunes. “It’s real for us, you know, even Oritsé’s reaction. We don’t want to get pushed out of the industry, we want to go out with a bang.” JLS’s last single, ‘Hold Me Down’ only reached Number 112 in the charts.
JLS lost out on the X Factor title to Alexandra Burke in 2008. They have had five Number One singles and released four studio albums. A statement posted on their website on Wednesday (April 24) says they are currently working on a greatest hits album, which will be their last. Its release will coincide with a farewell tour. “We wanted to make sure that you heard it from the four of us, that we have decided to bring our time as a band to an end,” the post reads.
“We are currently in the studio working on what will be our last album – ‘Goodbye: The Greatest Hits’. We will be bringing you a new single later in the year to coincide with the album and the tour. Goodbye: The Greatest Hits Tour will be the last time that we will perform together as a four and we want to make sure that this tour is the best ever and that we end on a high! We will always remain brothers and friends and we will always be your boys.”
Alan Carr: Chatty Man is on Channel 4 tonight at 10pm.
