Band referenced the late Bobby Womack in their show on the Pyramid Stage
Comedian Noel Fielding joined Kasabian onstage during their closing set on Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage, which saw red flares burning in the crowd, cryptic messages on the screen and a tribute to Bobby Womack, who died this week.
The set began with the background screen displaying the distinctive pink colour used on the sleeve of their new album ’48:13′, and the band began with a heavy version of album track ‘Bumblebeee’, as the word ‘Bumble’ was displayed behind then. Throughout the set, cryptic words appeared on the screen: among them ‘Voucher’, ‘Canister’ and ‘Dhalsim’.
Wearing a white dinner jacket, black bow tie and an armful of festival wristbands, frontman Tom Meighan addressed the crowd, saying: “Hello Glastonbury, how are you?” The band then played ‘Shoot The Runner’, introduced with a sample of Kanye West’s ‘Black Skinhead’. Following it, ‘Underdog’ saw a flare lit in the crowd, and another fired into the air – the first of many this evening. There was a lengthy breakdown with atmospheric synth effects from co-frontman Serge Pizzorno, who arched over keyboards in a T-shirt reading ‘Wilfred’. ‘Fast Fuse’ followed, then ‘Days Are Forgotten’, which saw three female backing singers wearing skeleton costumes arrive on stage.
Meighan then started a chant of “easy, easy” before playing recent single ‘Eez-Eh’, duing which Pizzorno jumping up and down at his keyboard. On the lyric “do you want some bugle“, Pizzorno mimed bringing his fingers up to his nose. During ‘Processed Beats’, which followed, Meighan stuck his tongue out at the crowd and Pizzorno rapped a portion of Grandmaster Flash’s ‘The Message’ over the closing bars. Another new album track, ‘Stevie’, was up next. Meighan asked how many Stevies were in the crowd beforehand, and the song included skeleton suit-wearing horn and string players.
After ‘I.D.’, Pizzorno performed a slow, moody cover of Gnarls Barkley’s ‘Crazy’ with just guitar and trumpet, with Meighan off stage. He then took vocals on the next track, ‘Let’s Roll Like We Used To’, too, but accompanied this time by the full band.
Meighan returned to the stage for ‘Club Foot’, which begun with Serge chanting “mosh pit, mosh pit” and saw numerous flares igniting in the crowd. After the well-received track, Meighan said, “Wakey wakey eggs and bakey, thank you eggs and bacon,” grinning. ‘Rewind’ and ‘Treat’, more tracks from ’48:13′, followed, the latter becoming increasingly beat-heavy as it went on, and ending with the stage in darkness.
Meighan then got a member of their crew onstage and got the audience to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ to him, before playing the hugely well-received ‘Fire’. The crowd were still singing the song after the band exited the stage, leaving a series of technicians in white jump suits to adjust their equipment.
As synth arpeggios boomed from the speakers, a message on the screen read ‘can you feel it coming’. Meighan, returning, said, “It’s not fucking over yet”.
A video appeared on screen of Mighty Boosh man Noel Fielding dressed as a vampire and telling the crowd to ‘Feel My Wrath’. As the band launched into ‘Vlad The Impaler’, Fielding appeared with them brandishing a comically sized bass, turban and with blood on his face. He danced around in his cape as Meighan adjusted the lyrics to reference the soul singer Bobby Womack, who died this weekend. “Bobby Womack see you on the other side” he sang. On exiting, Fielding told the crowd, “Glastonbury I suck your head like lollipop”.
Meighan then took a moment to put the set in context: “Ten years ago we opened The Other Stage – we’d been up all night of course,” he said. “Seriously, thank you for this.” A cover of ‘Praise You’ and ‘L.S.F. (Lost Souls Forever) concluded the set. The crowd were still singing as the band took their bows.
