Katy Perry ‘urged Russell Brand to file divorce papers to avoid upsetting her parents’

Actor and 'California Gurls' singer announced split yesterday (December 30)

Katy Perry encouraged Russell Brand to file for divorce from her rather than arranging the split herself to avoid upsetting her religious parents, according to a report.

The couple announced the end of their 14-month marriage yesterday (December 30), citing “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the split.

According to TMZ.com, Perry’s evangelical Christian parents raiser her to believe divorce is wrong, leaving Brand to formally arrange the split. Neither party was in Los Angeles when the papers were filed, with Perry heading to Hawaii and Brand returning to England.

The US gossip website claims that the couple’s relationship had been on the rocks for a couple of months, but both had made a “concerted effort” to make things work before deciding “it just wasn’t there”.

Brand married the ‘California Gurls’ singer at a ceremony in India in October 2010 and it had been previously reported that Perry was hoping to take a year off from music to start a family with Brand. However, rumours that the couple were on the verge of splitting had swirled in recent months.

Earlier this week it emerged that the couple had spent Christmas apart from each other and both then were pictured separately without their wedding rings.

Brand issued a statement yesterday, which reads as follows: “Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage. I’ll always adore her and I know we’ll remain friends.”

Perry, who has spent much of the last two years on tour in support of her latest studio album ‘Teenage Dream’, has yet to issue a statement about the separation.
