Kelly Clarkson enters the US album chart at No 1

Piece By Piece sold 97,000 copies for singer’s third chart-topper

Kelly Clarkson has achieved her third No 1 album in the US, after her seventh album Piece By Piece sold 97,000 copies to enter the Billboard Top 200 in the top spot. It beat off the soundtrack to 50 Shades Of Grey, which climbs to No 2. Piece By Piece entered the chart at No 6 on its release in the UK.

Clarkson’s previous No 1 album in the States was 2009’s All I Ever Wanted, with her subsequent releases, 2011’s Stronger and 2013’s Wrapped In Red, reaching No 2 and No 3 respectively.

Clarkson was the first winner of American Idol in 2002. Past winner Carrie Underwood has also reached No 1 in the US three times.

Taylor Swift’s 1989 is at No 3, the 19th week since its release that it’s stayed in the Top Five. The last album to achieve that feat was Adele’s 21, which stayed in the Top Five for 36 weeks on its release in 2011.

Last week’s No 1, Dark Sky Paradise by Big Sean, falls to No 6, while Brandi Carlisle’s The Firewatcher’s Daughter is the other Top 10 new entry at No 9. Maroon 5 are the only band in the Top 10, at No 7 with V. Britain is represented by Ed Sheeran’s X at No 5 and Sam Smith’s In The Lonely Hour at No 8.

Clarkson claimed this week (Monday) that Adele’s next album would take a country direction. She told The Wall Street Journal: “I heard Adele is doing something more country-influenced with this next record.” Clarkson added that she’d like to make a country album herself, saying: “Country musicians are the best storytellers. That’s how my record is going to sound one day.”
