Kendrick Lamar performs whilst shackled in chains at Grammys – watch

Rapper performed 'The Blacker the Berry' and 'Alright' at the event

Kendrick Lamar performed two tracks from his acclaimed album ‘To Pimp A Butterfly’ at last night’s Grammy Awards.

Lamar picked up the Best Rap Album accolade on the night, dedicating the award “to hip-hop”.

The rapper also performed his songs ‘The Blacker the Berry’ and ‘Alright’. The performance began with Lamar shackled in chains against the backdrop of a prison cell, before the stage turned into an African-themed set for the latter track. Watch below.

Speaking to Billboard prior to the performance, Grammys producer Ken Ehrlich said: “Kendrick came to us and said that we live in a time where these issues confront us every day and that it’s important that they be given a public forum, and he would like to use his x number of minutes to create a great performance that is consistent with his this year. It is overtly political and it is overtly provocative, and I think if nothing else it’s going to give people something to think about and talk about.”

Speaking during his Best Rap Album acceptance speech, the Compton rapper started by saying: “First off, glory to God, that’s for sure.”

He then went on to thank his family and management company, Top Dawg Entertainment, for “taking these kids out of the projects, out of Compton, and putting them right here on this stage to be the best that they can be.”

Lamar finished by saying: “Hip-hop. Ice Cube. This for hip-hop. This for Snoop Dog, ‘Doggy Style’, This for ‘Illimatic’, this for Nas. We will live forever. Believe that.”
