Legendary bassist explains how he became a video game star

Kiss bassist Gene Simmons has admitted that he never “dreamed of appearing” in the Guitar Hero franchise before he was approached to voice their new video game Warriors Of Rock.

Simmons voices the characters in the game’s ‘quest mode’, which trails the story of the Demi-God Of Rock who has to free himself from the shackles of The Beast and take him down by teaming up with eight other characters.

Speaking to NME, Simmons said: “It started with a phone call and I get lots of those. I thought initially they simply wanted to use a Kiss song and I thought, ‘Sure, why not.’ And then it turns out they wanted me to voice it.

“So, the more I got involved, the more excited I became because the storyline really hooked me in and doing the voiceover for all these characters was so seductive – especially for someone who likes the sound of his own voice. Of course the music was a big draw too, because there is everything from Black Sabbath to Muse and I love those bands.”

Despite having little knowledge of the game beforehand, the Kiss bassist said he is so hooked now that’s even ordered his own personalised guitar.

“I have to admit I never even dreamed of having anything to do with Guitar Hero, I never thought it would happen,” he said before he quipped. “But then I never thought Kiss would be bigger than The Beatles and Elvis put together.

“I’m waiting for my own personalised version now, I’m getting a special one [guitar] made for me because I have this huge eight-foot screen with huge speakers and I want to have a Guitar Hero: Warriors Of Rock party. They may even send me the Gene Simmons axe controller. It’s a possibility.”
